Nuwe stofomslae / New book covers

Melizandé Celine (melizandeceline@gmail.com) het vir my nuwe stofomslae ontwerp. Ek gaan my boeke se omslae vervang. Daar is enkeles wat nie op standaard is nie.

Melizandé Celine (melizandeceline@gmail.com) designed new book  covers for me. I am replacing some book covers. Not all of them are up to date.

Hierdie twee omslae is werklik van die beste gehalte en daar is geen onduidelikheid nie. Dit is nie ‘n modegier nie, maar ‘n welbeproefde verkoopstrategie, wat werk.

These two covers are of the best quality and there is no blur. This is not a fashion trend, but a well tested sales strategy, that works.

Welgedaan Melizandé. Jy weet net hoe. Dit is baie professioneel gedoen. Ek is trots op jou handewerk.

Well done Melizandé. You just know how. It is done very professionally. I am proud of your work.

Writer’s Block

images
In writing circles, you often hear this term, writer’s block.

According to the Wikipedia free online encyclopaedia the definition of it is:

Writer’s block is a condition, primarily associated with writing, in which an author loses the ability to produce new work or experiences a creative slowdown. The condition ranges in difficulty from coming up with original ideas to being unable to produce a work for years. Throughout history, writer’s block has been a documented problem.

There are apparently several types of writer’s block.

Read the article, The 10 Types of Writers’ Block (and How to Overcome Them) here.

I include two articles on how to overcome the condition.

The following article writes on how 13 famous writers overcame writer’s block. Read it here.

Now you will ask me how I do it.

I am not really experiencing the problem, although I reached some dead ends before. I have also experienced doubt on whether I am writing the correct course or if I must rather change direction.

I am currently writing three books at one time. As soon as I reach a point of uncertainty, doubt or even discomfort, I change back to one of the others or I start a new book. Normally when I get back to a book after a break of a few weeks, I am fresh and kick off as if I never took a break. Sometimes I have to read back a bit. With my serial killer novel, I had to read back several times as I am not allowed to make mistakes with the clues.

I don’t start too many books at a given time. Three is enough. I am coping by jumping between the three. In the back of my head I already have a further three ideas for more books.

With the writing of my web page I had a break of 3 weeks, as I was not familiar with WordPress. I took off with the writing as if I never stopped.

The First Page by Linda, the Daily Druid

The importance of the impression made on the reader by the first page of every book.

The thing is, when a reader picks up your book, your first page carries the very heavy responsibility of grabbing their interest and not letting go for anything – every line must make the reader want to read the next, or it doesn’t belong there. When I’m sampling a book, I generally read until I don’t want to any more. If I’ve made it to the end of the first page and I’m still interested, I’ll buy the book, or at least add it to my reading list. If I lose interest somewhere before that, I put the book back and move on. And we all know it, I’m not the only one who samples books in a similar manner.

Your first page should:

  • Hook the reader.
  • Introduce your protagonist.
  • Make your readers care.
  • Hint at conflict.
